Dixon Employment Resource Centre
Dixon Employment Resource Centre is a multi-purpose resource center intended
for use by clients who need assistance in accessing the labor market.

It has 12
computers equipped with high speed internet, several phone lines, faxes, photo
copiers and printers. Clients can take part in the daily employment related
workshops, can obtain one-on-one assistance with customized resumes and job
search research techniques, or can simply use the internet and other facilities
to engage in job search.
The center
will have intake forms that clients can register with and the center is open
Monday to Friday. Our professionals offer on-going 2 to 2.5- hour workshops, 4
days a week. Topics to be covered in the workshops but to be rotated on a
monthly basis are as follows:
- Introduction to
Computers.
- Labor market
information
- Researching
companies and making cold calls.
- Internet job
search
- Resume writing
skills and critique
- Canadian
workplace culture
- Job Interviewing
skills
- Cover letters and
references
- Introduction to
MS Word and Excel
- Career Decision
making
- Employment Standards,
Workers’ Rights and other labor issues.
- Mock Interviews
- Effective
presentation skills.
The center has done
an extensive marketing job reaching out to the community. From the number
of clients who now visit the center and obtain services, we estimate that by the
end of a 12 month period, the center will assist about 4,000 clients, about
40% of whom will be new registrants. During that same period, the center will
conduct about 192 employment related workshops.
